A devastating plane crash occurred at Muan International Airport in South Korea when a Jeju Air flight from Bangkok, Thailand, encountered a tragic accident during landing. The South Korean National Fire Agency reported that at least 167 people lost their lives after the plane veered off the runway and caught fire.
The incident happened at 9:03 am local time (00:03 GMT) on Sunday. The flight, a Boeing 737-800, was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members. Among the fatalities were 79 men, 77 women, and 11 individuals whose genders have not been confirmed. Two crew members were rescued, and the fire on the aircraft has been extinguished, according to officials.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, quoting fire officials, stated that the chances of finding additional survivors are diminishing.
Al Jazeera correspondent Rob McBride, reporting from Seoul, explained, “There appears to have been a landing gear malfunction. Media images show the plane landing on its belly, skidding along the runway, and then erupting into a large explosion.” Eyewitnesses described multiple explosions and a catastrophic blaze.
The aircraft was 15 years old, with reports indicating that two of the passengers were Thai nationals, while the rest were believed to be South Koreans.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra offered condolences to the families of the victims affected by this tragic incident.
