Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92
In April 2024, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha, capping a distinguished political career. As India’s 14th Prime Minister, he was widely respected for his intellectual depth, work ethic, and humility.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, describing Singh as one of India's most distinguished leaders, noting his significant impact on the country's economic policy and efforts to improve people's lives.
From 1991 to 1996, Dr. Singh served as the Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s leadership. He played a pivotal role in implementing economic reforms that steered India away from socialist policies and laid the foundation for liberalization and growth.
In a statement, AIIMS confirmed his passing:

He was under treatment for age-related ailments and experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26, 2024. Dr. Singh’s death is a significant loss for the nation, marking the end of a legacy defined by economic transformation and principled leadership.
Rahul Gandhi, a senior member of the Congress party, paid tribute to Singh, stating he had lost a "mentor and guide" whose "humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation."
